We have sword knot in an exact replica of those used to distinguish officer's swords from enlisted men's on the battlefield during the Civil War.

Sword knot strap is passed through a hole in the guard and then wrapped around the guard. Though now only decorative, sword knots were originally designed to prevent the sword being lost in battle. Wrapped around the hand or wrist the sword knot prevented the loss of the sword if it was accidentally dropped.
